Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy is an empowering process for the client who is seeking to self manage a chronic health challenge and looking to bring positive change into their life. Yoga Therapy looks at the whole person, their lifestyle and goals. Depending on the person’s individual needs the emphasis of a Yoga Therapy Programme may be towards the body, the mind, the emotions or a combination of all of these areas of their wellbeing.

For example, someone’s health may be challenged on a physical level such as chronic back pain. Through the initial consultation it becomes apparent that life stresses are aggravating this back condition; creating a vicious cycle which moves between back pain and stress, causing the reoccurring back pain. A Yoga Therapy prescription offers simple effective ways to self manage this condition which may include gentle movement, breath work, relaxation and meditation, simply put ‘quiet sitting’. All of these yoga practices are accessible for the client to use within the time available in their day.

Yoga Therapy offers simple effective ways in self-managing a wide variety of health conditions promoting positive health for the person as a whole. This is not a hands-on treatment instead offers simple and effective yoga tools where the client feels empowered to take care of their health. The Yoga Therapy sessions are client lead and the therapist works towards tailoring a practical Yoga Therapy ‘toolkit’ which enables the client to self-manage their health challenges. A typical yoga therapy programme may include gentle movement, restorative yoga postures, pranayama breath work, relaxation, visualisation, affirmations and meditation. Yoga Therapy can be used whilst receiving conventional western medicine and is available as one to one consultations or to small groups of people with share health conditions.

‘I came to yoga therapy after suffering with ME/CFS for some seven years, and the realisation that I had to look beyond conventional medicine to find approaches that would enable me to rediscover a way of navigating every day with some sense of calm and quiet enjoyment. I found Karan through the internet and we embarked on a six week exploration of the ways in which the yogic approach could help me regain balance and control.  I now have a tailor made toolkit of hand and body movements, breathing practices, meditations and relaxation exercises which I can bring into play each day according to how I am feeling and how my condition is at the time.  The sessions are one to one and interactive.  Karan is a good listener, an easy companion in this exploration, and very thoughtful, caring and responsive to the needs and wishes of her clients.  She is generous with her time and with her advice. Of all the techniques and approaches I have tried, yoga therapy has proved the most effective and life enhancing.  I would not hesitate to suggest it to anyone with a similar long term condition.’ Wendy A, Cheltenham

Before we meet you will be asked to completed a questionnaire. In the initial consultation we will talk about your health, lifestyle, your goals and what you are looking to get out of the sessions. Then a tailored yoga therapy prescription will be given to suit your lifestyle within the time you have available. We will continue to meet either weekly or bi-weekly to monitor how things are going, offering support and making any changes to your programme to suit your needs.

Unlike attending a regular yoga class, yoga therapy has a start and end date. After 4 – 6 sessions, you will have found the tools that support you and are then able to continue on your own with no need for any more sessions. If you would like to know more or talk about how yoga therapy can help you then please contact me.

Yoga Classes

Held in Cheltenham town centre and Charlton Kings, my daytime yoga classes are friendly and small, offering a calm and relaxed atmosphere to unwind and rejuvenate. Focusing on gentle flowing sequences to release tension from the body, guided breathing practices to calm a busy mind and deep relaxation to feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

All classes are suitable for beginners and welcome all levels of fitness. Within a group everyone progresses at their own pace, allowing the body to move freely and safely with awareness, throughout the class you will be shown how postures and sequences can be adapted to suit individual abilities. See class details at bottom of page or contact me.

Meditation Courses

My teaching follows Dru Meditation which is based on the yogic tradition and looks at the whole person, the mind, the body and the emotions. In this progressive 6-week course for beginners or those seeking a new approach to their meditation practice, you will learn different meditations and concentration exercises to start your journey of meditation. The role our posture and alignment of the spine has to play during meditation and the importance of deep relaxation.

All meditation, movement and relaxation practices are guided and in each of the six lessons we will look at how to prepare for meditation through movement and relaxation; rebalancing the body’s systems to come to a rested and alert place.

Each meditation will be different; some focus on body scanning; others on breath awareness and visualisation. Meditation is experiential so by trying out different practices this will give you the oppprtunity to find the ones that you enjoy the most and work best for you. The movement part of the lesson will be gentle and flowing; rebalancing and grounding before coming to sit. You will not be expected to sit on a cushion, unless you choose to do so.

The course aims to give you meditation practices which you can use in your daily life and start to feel positive benefits.

After the course there will be an opportunity to meet once a month to refresh your practice and ask any questions. See course details at bottom of page or contact me.

  • Dru Yoga has given me more peace of mind than I have known in a long time. It has also helped me to deal more effectively with stress. Last and not least it has helped me to lose much of the despair and grief that arose following a recent bereavement.–Amanda Springett, student.
